Immigration is a notoriously complex area of law, because it is both detailed and technical. Moreover, Immigration Law, like other administrative law fields, is highly procedure, form and document driven. This course will provide an overview of the main subject areas which are the basis of U.S. Immigration Law. This course will expose students to the unique laws of immigration and provide some of the tools utilized to keep up to date with the constant changes. The objective of this course is to introduce students to commonly used immigration terms and abbreviations, the governmental agencies involved, the various temporary and permanent immigration options, the different immigration forms and their purpose, and the requirements of some of the most commonly used immigration processes in family-based and employment-based immigration. This course will also cover the paralegal’s roles and responsibilities as it relates to working in an Immigration Law office.   Important Information:This course is not part of the Paralegal Certificate program and will not count towards that certificate. Anyone may enroll in this course to learn more about Immigration Law.

Instructed by Certified Legal Interpreters with local experience in a variety of case types, this course is designed to help prepare you for Georgia state certification program. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to be included in our graduate job board upon completion of your state certification. The Legal Interpreter program will provide you knowledge in the following areas: Interpreting skills (consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, and sight translation) Legal terminology - language-specific legal terms and expressions   Basic court room procedures and protocols; understanding of the judicial system and common focus of court assignments (including required observations of local courts)   Ethics and roles of the interpreter within the judicial system Cultural competency Prerequisite: High School Diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of Heritage Spanish or Spanish Series Two courses OR complete Written and Oral Skills Assessment OR submit transcript from another language assessment (TOEFL iBT, CLEP, ACTFL/LTI) for evaluation and submit Program Application.
