The Civil War in the Far West

Military campaigns of the Civil War, fought in the far west, even further west than Texas. Few recognize the significance of the struggle that extended into the Western Territories and to California. Course covers the Revolt of the Minnesota Sioux and the conflict in the Mormon settlements of Utah. Confederate leaders had plans to create a corridor from the Rio Grande to the Pacific coast and south into Northern Mexico. Their far range plans included a sympathetic Spanish speaking population and Western Indian tribes that would aid their cause directly or indirectly in establishing those goals and defeating Union forces along the way. Those “far ranged plans” failed yet would leave us with a kaleidoscope of historical events that would eventually shape the American West.
