This class will consider how literature's most popular form portrayed conditions of the period including race, gender, sexuality, and the rise of capitalism. The texts will be placed against the social-historical background, the rise of the middle-class reader, and contemporary responses to these narratives.

Joseph Conrad, The Heart of Darkness (1899)
D. H. Lawrence, Sons and Lovers (1913)
Class discussions will focus on the meaning of the novel, structure, narrative voice, point of view, character development, themes and images, moral tension and what makes these novels critically accepted as "great."
