Reflections on Elections

Many believe that recent Presidential are the only ones that have been controversial....Not So!   There have been some very interesting campaigns and elections that are worth reviewing. Following a quick review of Article II of the Constitution for Presidential powers, the class will take a look at unique elections in American history. With the exception of George Washington elections have had various levels of contention. Some had higher anxiety than others. This is not a current events class as no elections within the past 40 years will be discussed.  While our election system which is often criticized it is unique in the world, it has served the American people very well for some 240 years. We will describe the Electoral College which provides a rich perspective on uniquely American politics. The final two classes address, “When President’s Lie” and “Accidental Presidents” may give you some interesting perspectives.  Ever hear of President Tilden???  You will be surprised!
