The Age of Clipper Ships

The age of Clipper ships came, flourished, and vanished in the mid-nineteenth century, the result of a unique combination of people, events and circumstances.  With their sleek lines and billowing sails, these ships raced around the world in their quest to deliver cargoes in record time.  This course details the birth, the glory years, and the decline of the Clipper.  We examine the design in detail, the contributions of Matthew Fontaine Maury in mapping the oceans, the men and women of the Clipper trade, and some of the Clippers that made notable voyages.  The British with the famous tea race between Ariel and Taiping will be included.
