When the War of 1812 began the United States had a 17-ship blue water navy to face the 600-plus ships of the British. In this course we will examine the events leading up to the war, the construction and deployment of the six “super” frigates, the amazing officer corps of the fledgling Navy, the strong opposition they faced, and the sea battles that rattled the British Admiralty. We will also see the action that took place on the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain. We will use firsthand narratives and correspondence between the captains and the Secretary of the Navy, and cover a potpourri of nautical facts and trivia.
