Dissecting the Novel

Often the best way to understand and improve is to study the expert around us.  Just as great artists study great art, we can study great writers.  We can be told how something works or we can experience it.  Rather than focus on our own writing process, we will spend this course peeling back the layers of an actual bestseller.  Does a bestselling author use a 3-ACT Structure? Can we identify the nine plot points? How are subplots created and concluded? Where and why does the author use story versus plot? How does an author actually use backstory, showing tone and voice to portray his passion and themes? How are the protagonist and antagonist developed and put into battle? How does the author use scene and sequel to create the pace? Can we watch the author's creative process from beginning to end? Do novels actually follow a form(ula)? Let's delve deep into a recent bestseller and find out. In this class you not only learn all of the elements of a novel, you will see them in action.  If you want to write, this course will help you see why form(ula) works.  If you already write, this course will add to your arsenal of understanding.  If you are a reader, you will be more engaged in everything you read.
