General Robert E. Lee's senior commander, lieutenant General James Longstreet moved to Gainesville in 1875. He lived out his life here in Georgia, remaining acitve in politics, writing his memoirs, losing his first wife, remarrying, and operating a hotel. During this tour we will visit the location of his daughter's home where Longstreet died in1904. Guests will enjoy seeing the most beautiful monument to the general in the country, which stands on the site where his beloved home once stood. A trip to Gainesville is not complete without lunch at the aptly named Longstreet's Cafe. Everyone will purchase their meal from an extensive menu, then we will visit tranquil Alta Vista Cemetery, the final resting placeof the general. Perhaps saving the best for last, our stop at the Piedmont Hotel, home to the Longstreet Society, will give everyone a chance to tour the museum located inside Longstreet's former hotel.
