For the most part, the wives and mothers of our American Presidents have remained shadowy background figures with a few notable exceptions. Who hasn't heard of Abigail Adams, Mary Todd Lincoln, Eleanor Roosevelt, Roselyn Carter and Barbara Bush? In this class, we will learn about the lives of the mothers and wives of all the men elected president of the United States. Did their mothers shape the future presidents character and values? Did their wives further influence their political careers in a positive way? Or, did their mothers and wives have a negative impact on their lives and careers? By the end of the course, we should be able to answer these questions, or at least have some ideas about these presidential relationships.
