This course will trace the origin and development of one of the most popular genres of fiction, the mystery story.  The course will follow the growth of the mystery novel from its early incarnations in the short stories of Edgar Allan Poe to its contemporary representatives in the novels of Lawrence Block and Michael Connelly.  From Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot to Matt Scudder and Harry Bosch, the great detectives of the mystery world will demonstrate their unique personalities and their wide range of genius as they seek to apprehend those doers of evil deeds.
