« back to classes page
Designed as an introduction for those who want to start and/or a refresher for those who are currently painting in oil. We will explore and explain the use of oil paint within the modern perspective with an emphasis on realism/impressionism using a limited palette.  The students knowledge and skills will be evaluated along with their needs and goals so they can create successful paintings.  The course will begin with methods of setting up a proper palette, brush selection, thinners and dryers.  Special emphasis will be put on safe studio habits.  We will paint wet on wet-or Alla Prima in the class.  Subjects to be explored are the still life, landscape, an interior, a self portrait, and a floral.  Students will be instructed on how to execute a larger painting from their original work including research on subject matter, sizing, needed composition changes and materials.  Final classes will be devoted to getting work ready to show, including varnishing, framing, presentation and application procedures.
