Phlebotomy Technician Certificate

ID : 41625
« back to classes page
Phlebotomists work directly with patients to collect quality blood samples in clinical settings and prepare those samples for laboratory testing. Phlebotomists may work in dynamic, fast-paced environments such as physician offices, clinics, nursing homes, hospitals, and labs to create a comfortable patient atmosphere. In some settings, a Phlebotomist may perform bedside testing.

The Phlebotomy Technician Certificate includes theory and hands-on instruction during the two-month program. Students will learn the anatomy of the circulatory system, medical terminology, quality assurance, and infection control. Students will also learn the basics of HIPAA security and privacy as it relates to the profession. Hands-on training in venipuncture procedures, capillary procedures, heelsticks, and non-blood specimens are also performed. Individuals interested in starting a career in the medical field, nursing or physician assistant school applicants, prospective patient care technicians, current nurses, or those looking to develop skills may benefit from this program. As a part of this program, students will participate in a live skills lab setting, performing venipunctures and capillary sticks. This 80 hour certificate program will assist students in preparing for the National Healthcareer Association Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam. Exam fee and textbook are additional. Textbook is required at the first class meeting and is available at the KSU Main Campus Bookstore website: bookstore.kennesaw.edu. Call 470-578-6261 for questions, pricing, and availability. Be sure to identify yourself as a CPE student.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Describe effective infection control in the healthcare setting.
  • Define the structure of the cardiovascular system, to include the associated medical terms, disorders, and diagnostic tests.
  • Obtain non-blood specimens competently.
  • Demonstrate common blood collection procedures.
Prerequisite: Working knowledge of computers and access to a laptop or desktop computer and the internet are required.

Note: This is a hybrid class. You will receive a detailed schedule noting synchronous and asynchronous sessions in Moodle. You will receive access to Moodle 2 days before the class starts.

Those interested in obtaining a Patient Care Technician (CPCT) national certification may be eligible to take the national exam upon successful completion of the following certificate programs offered by KSU: Certified Nursing Assistant, EKG Technician, and Phlebotomy Technician. Experience may be substituted in lieu of a KSU Certificate and will be evaluated by the testing organization on an individual basis as criteria for meeting the exam eligibility requirements.
