Since May 1, 1991, the Berlin Philharmoniker celebrates and commemorates the cultural unity of Europe and the founding of the orchestra.  The concerts were conceived as televised presentations.  Seven TV cameras choregraph the orchestra, so, that you not ony hear the music, but see the instruments and the players.  Via sight and sound, you will understand why Beethoven sounds like Beethoven.

Night and the city; hard boiled detectives and sinister femme fatales; damaged heroes and innocent ingenues. These are some of the ingredients that make up one of the most original genres in American film history.  From the early 1940's to the late 1950's these mostly low budget black and white films captured the cynicism and disillusionment of post World War II America, while at the same time introducing some of the most skilled directors and most iconic actors of the 20th century (Humphrey Bogart, Burt Lancaster, Robert Mitchum, Barbara Stanwyck, and Ava Garner). This 8 week course will analyze some of the most well known films of this period, beginning with "Double Indemnity" and including such classics as "The Big Sleep", "The Killers", and "Out of the Past". So grab your old trenchcoat and join us for a visit to the dark side of the big city streets.

In landscape art, water is often an essential component of the scene. Water may appear as waves crashing against rocks at the seashore; movement of a stream flowing through a forest before dropping into a waterfall; ripples spreading outward from a tossed stone or a horse taking a drink; rain falling from the sky, dew drops on a blossom; mist and clouds as part of the changing weather, even snow and ice of winter. This course will introduce the artist to drawing techniques using pencil, pen, charcoal, blender, and eraser applied to a variety of paper textures that will capture the features of nature found in landscape art.  There will be demostrations, followed by practice and feedback by the instructor and students.  You will leave this course with information to sharpen your skills no matter what your medium.

This course will be a "gentle" beginning for those who wish to start learning how to listen to opera in the more contemporary format. We will hear operatic works by Copland, Ward, Britten and Barber among other living composers, and begin to listen for the elements that either relate to or replace the more familiar literature of famous operatic composers of earlier centuries.  No text is required and all are welcome to join in the adventure of exploring opera in today's world!
