On vacation, many travelers take photo's; some keep a diary of their impressions.  But, a sketch of what you see and feel when experiencing the moment can provide a long-lasting record that stimulates your "play-back" description. This course provides students of all levels an opportunity to practice sketching impressions, on the spot and from photo's, along with instructor demonstration and instruction. At first, a pencil and sketch pad will be used to capture stationary objects then, we will graduate to create movement of shapes and finally, add sensory impressions.  As confidence increases, students will be encouraged to add pastel, ink or water color to complement the memory of movement.  There will be plenty of opportunity to experience inside and outside the classroom.  You may find a masterpiece grow out of your thumbnail sketch with time and instructor oversight.  This sketch may be all you want or need to tell the story of your experience.

In his "The Da Vinci Code" Dan Brown merely scratched the surface.  Join us as we delve more deeply into the hidden language employed by the Masters of the Italian Renaissance. Through interactive dialogue and hands on activities, we'll explore the masterworks of the Raphaels, the Leonardos, and the Michelangelos.  And in a matter of weeks we'll be deciphering a visual code reserved not only for the intellectual elite but one so masterfully executed that many scholars believe this time period to be the apex of Western artistic expression.

In this course, students will be exploring Baroque art (1600-1750).  Imagine sitting in a room with Sigmund Freud, Steve Jobs and John Dillinger, each vying for the other's oxygen.  We would call this the perfect storm.  In art, it is called the imperfect pearl, or the Baroque, a period in western Europe ranging from 1600 to 1750. Join us as we delve into this world filled with entrepreneurs, mavericks, and Europe's first bohemian artists known as Rubens, Rembrandt, Caravaggio, and Vermeer.

Since May 1, 1991, the Berlin Philharmoniker celebrates and commemorates the cultural unity of Europe and the founding of the orchestra.  The concerts were conceived as televised presentations.  Seven TV cameras choregraph the orchestra, so, that you not ony hear the music, but see the instruments and the players.  Via sight and sound, you will understand why Beethoven sounds like Beethoven.

"...only God can make a tree." (Joyce Gilmer).  Every landscape artist realizes the importance of being able to reproduce a believable tree, a bush, a flower, even grass.  This course offers the opportunity to replicate plants in a scene, from the structure of a tree anchored by roots, to texture of bark, to the lace canopy of leaves; and the natural world that surrounds it.  This course will focus upon how to light and shadow play upon the display of each plant in a landscape and upon specific plants inside a composition.  Using pencil, charcoal or pen, we will practice techniques to capture these images in your stetchbook- practice intended to transfer to other media of your choice- for realistic as well as abstract art.

In landscape art, water is often an essential component of the scene. Water may appear as waves crashing against rocks at the seashore; movement of a stream flowing through a forest before dropping into a waterfall; ripples spreading outward from a tossed stone or a horse taking a drink; rain falling from the sky, dew drops on a blossom; mist and clouds as part of the changing weather, even snow and ice of winter. This course will introduce the artist to drawing techniques using pencil, pen, charcoal, blender, and eraser applied to a variety of paper textures that will capture the features of nature found in landscape art.  There will be demostrations, followed by practice and feedback by the instructor and students.  You will leave this course with information to sharpen your skills no matter what your medium.
