The stage has always been a prime source of material for filmmakers, and no genre has provided more film riches than the Broadway musical.  From Edna Ferber's 1927 classic "Showboat" to the pop operas of "Les Miserables" and "Phantom of the Opera in the 1990's". Hollywood has found a way to convert smash musicals into cinematic masterpieces.  This two part course will trace the evolution of this popular art form as it moves from the simple black and white versions of the 1930's through the lavish productions of the 1960's to the gritty modern era of the 1990's and 2000's.  Part one will include "Showboat" , "Oklahoma, " "South  Pacific," " The Music Man, " "West Side Story," "Oliver," "My Fair Lady," and "The Sound of Music".  The class will discuss the differences between the stage version and the film version of these classic shows.  If you love great stories set to music and dance this is the course for you.
