Landscape design is a field where you may work independently with homeowners, as an employee or subcontractor with a landscape installation company, or with home building contractors to help complete new home landscapes. Over 12 weeks you will be introduced to the theory and concepts of successful landscape design, materials options and elements of successful design necessary to prepare a residential landscape plan. Students will put learning into practice with three drawing assignments during the course, evaluating design found in other gardens, and a site visit to a nursery to aid in learning identification and understanding the plant shapes and textures as part of the design process. Upon completion of the course, you will be able to: Perform a needs analysis of the residential landscape opportunity Accurately find or take measurements for a property base map Select appropriate plant material for design implementation and determine approximate spacing of plants Create a design that is aesthetically pleasing and includes the elements of good design principles Review landscape practices and IPM (Integrated Pest Management) Recognize how hardscapes such as walkways, patios, ponds and lighting can be incorporated into landscape designs Landscapers, homeowners, nursery professionals and related horticulture professionals will enhance their skill set by adding this certificate to their career tools.
