This class explores the early history of Latin America through the lives of extraordinary women, among them a chieftain-queen, a cross-dressing soldier-nun, the first poet of the Americas, and a seamstress spy who sparked revolution. We will study how these and other European, indigenous, African, and mixed-descent female leaders helped shape conquest, settlement, and early revolution in Latin America.
