Medical Office Assistants are immersed in the daily front office operations of physician, dental, chiropractic, and veterinary offices, as well as medical centers, nursing homes, and clinics. Medical Office Assistants may handle responsibilities for patient scheduling, patient check in and out, practice communications, reimbursements, and records management.

The Medical Office Assistant Certificate includes theory and hands-on computer instruction during the four-month program. Students will learn human anatomy and medical terminology by body system, patient reception and processing, office operations, electronic medical records, basic diagnostic and procedural coding, health insurance claims, and practice management. Students will also learn the basics of HIPAA security and privacy as it relates to the profession. Hands-on training in electronic medical records, medical practice management software, patient billing, and insurance claims are also performed. Individuals interested in a career in the medical field or those looking to develop healthcare related skills may benefit from this program. This certificate program will assist students in preparing for the National Healthcareer Association Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) exam. Exam fee and textbooks are additional. Textbooks are required at the first class meeting and are available at the KSU Center Bookstore.
