The stalemate at Cassino and Volturno is broken, a landing to outflank the German defenses at Anzio- Nettuno. Once again, a combined American- British landing force is forced into a defensive beachhead. Like Salerno in 1943, German counterattack prevents a breakout. For nearly six months the Allies fought to break out of their beachhead. When they finally do in May, they advance to Rome. The city falls into Allied hands-on June 4, 1944, two days before D-Day.
