This course will continue to look at the wild decade of the 1960s. The British Invasion will be examined as well as the Space Race, the weapons race and the threat of thermonuclear war will be examined. We’ll look at the civil rights movement, especially the different approaches of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X. We’ll look at the JFK assassination, and various theories surrounding it. The riots of the sixties, especially the Watts riot, will be examined. We’ll examine the Vietnam War and its historical roots, especially in the mid-20th century. Did you know that the OSS (precursor to the CIA) worked with Ho Chi Minh during World War II? We’ll look at how and why the U.S. gradually became entangled in one of our most controversial conflicts. Finally, we’ll look at the end of the sixties, 1969, including Chappaquiddick, the Tate-LaBianca murders, and Woodstock. Where were you when all of these events happened? Please share, if you’d like to. The course is lecture/discussion so bring your comments and questions.
