Late 1864 Sherman’s Army was in Atlanta and prepared their march to the sea, however in the outlying counties, the fighting did not diminish. Union foragers, Confederate cavalry, Home Guards, guerrilla bands, and deserters roamed the countryside. Lawlessness and terror intensified, spreading through North Georgia, and civilians were caught in the middle.
